CLASS INFORMATION FOR BOTH PALM BAY AND MELBOURNE LOCATIONS

PALM BAY COMMUNITY CENTER/CAPTAIN'S HOUSE
8 week sessions as follows: 

Tuesdays 6:30 to 7:45 (level 1)  7:30 to 8:45 (level 2)

2008 SUMMER Session for PALM BAY CLASSES runs June 3rd  -July 22nd (makeup class July 29th)

LEVEL 1:  Students, especially those new to this kind of dance  are encouraged to  start at Week 1..  Class is very structured in content and new students will not be admitted after the middle of the session (week 4 or later) and will be encouraged to wait till the next session.

What's covered in Level 1? ( not necessarily in order, but over the 8 week course)

General:  Tribal Style History and Description , Tribal posture, Isolation Exercises, Head Slides,

Hand and Arms:  Wrist circles, Snake Arms, Tribal Arm Positions, Shoulder Shimmies

Slow movements: Maya, Taxim, Ribcage Rotation, Arabic, Structural Roll, Figure 8's, Slow 3/4 shimmy

Fast movements: Ghawazee and Variations, Hip Lifts and Drops with variations, Hip Bump Combo, Egyptian Basic, Tunisian, Basic Hip Shimmy

 

LEVEL 2 :  

Introducing Families of Moves and beginning zill patterns.

Fast  Moves: Ghawazee, 3/4 shimmies, Hip Bump,  Tunisian, Egyptian Basic -  "family" and variations. 

Slow Moves: Maya, Arabic,  Figure 8's, Structural Roll, Ribcage rotation.

 

LEVEL 3 :  

Back to basics:  Wrapping up the  review on slow moves....continuing work on isolation drills and new moves

 


MELBOURNE- HENEGAR CENTER  --ONGOING (no "sessions" )  

CLASSES  EVERY THURSDAY    EXCEPT  NO CLASS ON THURSDAY JULY 3rd

Technique  Level 1:  6:30-7:30      Isolations Drills, Simple Turns,  Introduce/Review Basic posture, movements, arm positions,  Fast moves: Hip Lifts/Drops and Twists and travelling with these .   Slow moves:  Mastering forward and reverse figure 8's,  mayas, hip sways, and a figure 8/hip circle combo.  Also introduction to veil and zills  

Technique Level 2:  7:30-8:30  -    In addition to our regular technique and isolation drills:   slow and fast combinations, zills and rhythms,

Specialty Classes:  APRIL 24th:  Balancing Class:  Swords, Fire Bowl, Canes, Baskets, Shamadan..an overview of different props used for balancing -- Balancing techniques, use in performance, etc.

 

Class also includes a discussions on the history of  this dance, overview of styles, trends, music, choreography, improvisation  costuming, etc.
